Poland lends a hand to EU-eager Bulgaria

Date: 21.04.2006

Poland has reaffirmed its staunch support for Bulgaria's bid to enter the EU soon.

The Polish prime minister, who was in Sofia Wednesday to meet his Bulgarian colleague, praised Bulgaria's economic progress.

Poland upholds the Bulgarian bid to become EU member in 2007, Kazimierz Marcinkiewicz told Bulgaria's Sergey Stanishev.

The top guest from Warsaw sounded happy with the intensified trade between the two countries. Last year, it grew by 40%, and Polish tourists and potential investors are building up even higher interest for Bulgaria, Marcinkiewicz has said.

His host Stanishev assured him that the EU would benefit from welcoming Bulgaria as a full member.

The country is eager to step in on January 1, 2007, but lagging reforms and the inefficient fight against crime are threatening to put off membership by a year.
