Bulgaria's Roma to build own apartments

Date: 29.04.2006

Bulgaria will include Roma workers in the building of apartments for their community, Regional Development Minister Asen Gagaguzov said before Parliament Friday.

People from the minority will also take part in the development of programs that are to solve their accommodation problems, and other issues of their integration. The problems of this ethnic group deepen with each year, Gagauzov said.

Bulgaria's government has already accepted a program that plans the investment of EUR 630 M in various Roma integration programs. About 40% of this money will be from the country's budget, and the rest will come from the municipalities, or from EU funds.

The main goal of this program is to raise the living standard of the minority. Nationalist MP from Ataka (Attack) Stanislav Stanilov called this a useless spending of taxpayers' money.
