USA pays for roads and new barracks

Date: 29.04.2006

The USA will invest some $100 million in its military facilities in Bulgaria. About $28 million are the funds meant for the airbase in Graf Ignatievo (southern Bulgaria) where new barracks and residential premises will be built.

Another 30 million dollars will be allotted for the reconstruction of the Bezmer airbase (southeastern Bulgaria). The initial sum has been increased by $2 million and experts' opinion is that it could be raised. The serious problem there is the short runway which hardly covers even the minimum standards for landing of big jets. It should be extended because of the swampy soil which could need draining, so the price of the repair may grow even higher.

The biggest investment will be made in the region of the military facility near Novo Selo, Sliven region (eastern Bulgaria). A single road leads to this training ground and the strict military regulations read that the roads must be at least three with enough detours and links between them. A sewerage network and additional water pipelines are also to be built. According to the preliminary calculations, the invested sum will vary between $30 and $60 million.
