Bulgaria to Send Humanitarian Aid for Indonesian's Earthquake Victims

Bulgaria is ready to send humanitarian aid exceeding in value 160 000 leva for the victims of the May 28 earthquake in Indonesia.

The Bulgarian government informed the EU information and monitoring centre of its intentions to aid Jakarta, Bulgarian National Radio reported. Disaster Management Minister Emel Etem said that the country would donate medicines, 50 tents and mattresses, 1 500 blankets.

Etem announced the government's intentions during a conference in Lom discussing ways of co-operation in cases of increased water level of the Danube River.

The May 28 earthquake in Java, with magnitude of 6.2 on the Richter scale, killed over 4 611 people. According to Red Cross data, two thirds of the victims are children. Casualties amounted to 20 000 people. Over 4 000 buildings were destroyed.

Indonesia and the International Red Cross requested urgent humanitarian and financial aid of over $9.85 million. With the money Indonesia would try to provide food, shelter and medical care for the 200 000 people now homeless, Indonesian vice president Jusuf Kalla said.
