Bulgaria Buys Airplanes together with NATO

Date: 29.07.2006

The Bulgarian Military Aviation will acquire two new transport airplanes C-17. However, the airplanes will be purchased together with six other NATO-member countries, Bulgaria's Defense Minister Veselin Bliznakov said yesterday.

The Minister returned yesterday from the Farnborough International Air Show 2006 in Great Britain where he studied the capacity of the enormous airplanes. "The airplanes can transport both military personnel and equipment," said Bliznakov.

NATO has two programs for strategic transport. One of them is called SALIS, under which Ukrainian Antonov airplanes are rented. However, these planes do not have missile defense. Therefore the decision for the purchase of the two C-17 has been taken. Under the project each country will pay for the time when it uses the airplanes. The exact sum that the Bulgarian army will have to pay was not specified.
