Bulgarian Textile Firms Must Meet 500 European Requirements

Date: 30.09.2006

Over 80 % of the Bulgarian textile firms are not ready for the forthcoming EU entry, announced Diana Marinkova, director of the Bulgarian Light Industry Association. The Bulgarian companies will have to meet some 500 requirements set by the EU to continue their work after January 1, 2007. It is expected that at least half of the firms working in the branch will meet the European standards by the end of the year.

Only 30 % of the capacities in the Bulgarian textile industry meet the contemporary standards. Out of a total of 13 000 textile firms currently working in the country some 85 % are small or medium-sized businesses. Only 4 000 of them are working at full capacity and thus forming about 30 % of the country's export.

About 200 000 people work in this branch. The development of the textile industry in Europe and Bulgaria's place in this process will be discussed at the World Congress of the International Federation of the Textile Experts, which will be held from October 1 to October 5 in Plovdiv.
