Date: 18.09.2006

The annual "Transatlantic Tendencies" survey carried out among 1 000 citizens of the USA and 12 European countries (Bulgaria, Germany, France, Great Britain, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Spain and Turkey) shows that 68 percent of the Bulgarians do not approve of the foreign policy pursued by President Bush, while 20 percent support it. The public disapproval rate for Bush in Bulgaria is lower than the average in Europe, where it stands at 77 percent.

In Poland and Romania alone the margin between public support and disapproval is only 5-6 percent. As for the United States, 58 percent of the respondents do not side with President Bush when it comes to foreign policy, whereas 40 percent back him.

Opinion polls show that 63 percent of the Europeans believe that the EU enlargement process would help enhance the authority and role of the Union. In Bulgaria this percentage reaches 82. Among the 12 European countries a total of 64 percent support the idea of appointing a foreign minister for Europe.
