Smolyan Bells are Unique

Date: 27.08.2006

"To make a bell ring as is it sings is not a simple job. Technical knowledge is not enough, insight and ear for music are necessary," Myumyun Borissovich says of his profession. He is a deputy head of the Moscow company that jointly with the ZIL plants produced the bells for St Vissarion of Smolyan Cathedral. On September 30, last year Borissovich arrived in Smolyan (southern Bulgaria) for the sanctification of the 11 unique bells. For days afterwards they tuned each one of them so that the sound they produced would be harmonious.

"In the world there is no other such a set of 11 bells like in this church," Borisovich is sure. The biggest bell weighs 2 tons, it is 152 cm high and 145 cm in diameter. The smallest weighs 8 kg and the eleven of them weigh total five tons. Only Alexander Nevski Cathedral in Sofia can boast of similar set of church bells.

Four of the largest bells in Smolyan's cathedral are decorated with images of saints and the name of Todor Batkov, the cathedral's main benefactor is engraved.
