Rozhen 2006 Sets a Record

Date: 12.08.2006

For two days - on Saturday and Sunday - Rozhen turns into the folk center of Bulgaria. This year, the traditional folklore fest will be a most spectacular event - a record-breaking number of participants will take part in the edition of the fest. More than 6000 folklore ensembles have confirmed their participation. Thousands of singers, dancers and story-tellers from all over the country will join them.
Forty gold plaquettes will be awarded to the best ensembles and 30 - to the best individual performers. All the participants will be handed diplomas. The prizes are symbolic, but all the musicians - from the smallest to the oldest ones - will keep the beautiful memory of the event for years to come.
On Sunday evening the longest horo - traditional Bulgarian ring dance - will close the musical event. It is expected that the festival will turn into one of the most significant cultural events this year and break the record from 1972 when 150 000 spectators applauded 3 500 performers.

"This is the biggest stage for the Rhodope song," Minister of Culture Stefan Danailov said yesterday. He is the patron of the event, which will be held on August 12 and 13. "Let's hope that the weather and the Rhodope mountain will be well-disposed to us!," he added.

Professor Danailov has invited the whole cabinet and President Parvanov to attend the folk show. Mayor of Smolyan Dora Yankova is proud of the fest's excellent organization: 70 ha of mown meadows have been sprayed against parasites; a huge parking lot is at guests' disposal. The observatory, planetarium and the new church will be opened.

Groups from all over Bulgaria and many foreign tourists, fans of the Rhodope song, are expected to attend the fiesta. The performances will be filmed and turned into a unique documentary.
