Ancient Sculpture Found in Bulgaria

Date: 01.09.2006

A sculpted piece of artwork representing the head of a man was found during archaeological works at Bulgaria’s old capital of Pliska.

The sculpture was the first of its kind found at the site of the first Bulgarian capital, Valeri Grigorov from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences’ archaeological institute said.

Craftsmen produced the sculpture using the limestone found in the region. The artwork has 40 by 27 cm dimensions.

Archaeologists were still uncertain to which period the finding dated. They also refrained from confirming that the sculpture was authentic.

In case the sculpture was authentic, it was going to represent a unique for the place archaeological find, Grigorov said.

More information about the sculpture could be expected after the end of the archaeological season in October.
