Bulgaira and Romania Ease Visa Regime

Date: 01.09.2006
Bulgaria and Romania agreed to facilitate the visa regime for university students travelling between both countries. Visas will not be issued in embassies as so far but will be put in the passports at crossing of the borders. Bulgarians, for instance, who study in Romania, will be issued visas at the border and it will not be for one year but for the whole period of their education. Bulgaria's Interior Minister Rumen Petkov and his Romanian counterpart Vasile Blaga signed the agreement, which should come into force from January 2007 on. Visas will be mostly issued at Giurgiu - Rousse border checkpoint and all procedures will be carried out at one desk. The number of Romanian tourists to Bulgaria has increased several times and the Bulgarian investments to Romania are now US $12 million, according to Petkov. "We have fulfilled all requirements so that we may join the EU on January 1, 2007," said Romania's Interior Minister.
