Sofia Airport Old Runway Shuts down

Date: 02.09.2006

Sofia airport's old runway will close at midnight on Wednesday for reconstruction, while its new track will open just a few hours later.

The first plane to take off the brand new runway will be a Boeing of flag carrier Bulgaria Air, flying from the capital Sofia to the Black Sea Varna.

The Kuwait-French consortium Mohammed Abdulmohsin Al-Kharafi & Sons won the new runway construction project in June 2002.

The company constructed a 3 600-m-long runway, suitable even for the largest aircraft.

The airport authorities promised that the aircraft noises would be reduced since all aircraft, taking off from Sofia, will have to fly by 400-500 m higher. The traffic will be soon diverted and aircraft will no more fly above the heads of the capital's citizens.
