Stanishev: Bulgaria will join the EU for its efforts

Date: 06.09.2006

"Bulgaria will join the EU due to the serious efforts our country and people have been exerting for many years," Bulgaria's PM Sergei Stanishev stated yesterday, commenting on a column published in the Financial Times.

"Bulgaria and its politicians, as well as the whole public, have the strong ambition to do their best job so that the European Commission (EC) has enough good grounds to propose Bulgaria's EU membership on January 1, 2007," Stanishev said further.

In Stanishev's opinion, the political environment in the EU is more different and more skeptical regarding the further EU enlargement compared to the case in 2004, when 10 new countries joined the EU, eight of which were from Eastern Europe.

Yesterday, PM Stanishev flew for Strasbourg, where he will have a meeting with the President of the European Parliament Josep Borrell and the President of the EC Jose Barroso.
