Stanishev: Bulgaria has suffered enough

Date: 07.09.2006

The direct foreign investments in Bulgaria for the first six months of the current year stood at 1.4 billion euro. The latest hit among Britons and Irishmen is to invest their money in property in Bulgaria.

"Bulgaria's GDP growth is 5.6% for the first six months of 2007. This is a sign of economic activity and increasing interest from investors," Stanishev said further. "If we meet all EU membership criteria, no safeguard clauses can be imposed on Bulgaria."

An hour later Franco Frattini showed support for Bulgaria, saying that safeguard clauses should not be activated.

Sergei Stanishev gave a 35-minute presentation on Bulgaria's readiness to join the EU in one of the most luxurious hotels in Brussels, Renaissance. A report prepared by Transparency International shows that the corruption index in Bulgaria is 55% while in Romania it is 85 %. The Czech Republic ranks before Bulgaria with 47%. Poland, Croatia, the Ukraine are ranked after Bulgaria.

Stanishev gave information about high-ranking government officials that are being investigated for corruption and pointed out that there was no political umbrella for the corrupt in Bulgaria. Stanishev said he expected that the European Commission would treat Bulgaria fairly and objectively.
