Russia Is Getting Weary of Belene Project

Date: 08.09.2006

Russian news agency Ria Novosti broke a sensational news - Russia is about to give up a project for the construction of Bulgaria's second nuclear power plant in Belene on the Danube. Bulgaria shows an increasingly strong interest to the construction of the plant, whereas the Russian bidders are getting weary of waiting too long for Sofia's final decision, the agency reports.

The Bulgarian authorities had to arrive at the decision as early as May. Their lingering, however, makes the victory in the tender less appealing to the Russians. Russian-French consortium "Atomstryexport-Framatom" offers two options for the construction of Belene. They are worth 2.68, 2.63 billion euro, respectively.

The indecisiveness of the Bulgarian government may result in change of Russian interest towards the project. According to Ria Novosti, Russia might well opt for expanding Chinese and Indian markets.
