EC to Cut Down Agriculture Money If Bulgaria Is Not Ready to Absorb them

Date: 12.09.2006

EU Agriculture Commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel praised Bulgaria's Agriculture Minister Nihat Kabil on the progress with the agriculture sector, but criticized the project for identification of farmlands

Brussels may decide to cut down the agriculture subsidies for Bulgaria and Romania for a year if the two countries are not ready to create acceptable system for control of the funds, the Reuters reported as quoting a document of the EC.

This, however, does not automatically mean that the Bulgaria and Romanian will lose these subsidies. This is only an instrument of the EC, which may be activated if necessary at a later stage.

"Even if a safeguard clause is provided in the final monitoring report of the EC on Bulgaria, this does not necessarily mean that it will be activated," EU Agriculture Commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel said, appearing from her yesterday's meeting with Bulgaria's PM Sergey Stanishev and Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Nihat Kabil.

She said there was considerable progress in the agriculture reforms in Bulgaria, however there was a delay in the integration of othophotographic map with the property data.

Minister Kabil said his team would do everything possible so as agriculture not to become the obstacle to Bulgaria's accession into the EU.
