New Firms Are the Major Bribe Payers

Date: 19.09.2006

The newly established and small firms give most of the bribes. This is true for both Bulgaria and the whole region of Southeastern Europe. The data are from the World Bank's report for 2005 entitled Anti-corruption under Conditions of Transition Period, which was presented yesterday in the Council of Ministers.

The big and stable firms are the ones that pay  almost 20% of the bribes, announced Cheryl Gray, director of the World Bank. In Bulgaria bribe giving occurs in some 20% of the cases of interaction between business and administration, the quoted data show. The results of the research come from a poll conducted among 20 000 firms from 26 countries of Southeastern Europe, EU, Asia and Africa.

Bulgaria ranks 54th from a total of 175 countries included in the corruption research.
"Despite this fact the conditions for business and investments in Bulgaria have improved in the last five years," said Economy and Energy Minister Roumen Ovcharov.
