Bulgaria Exports Arms Worth 120 Million Euro

Date: 21.09.2006

Bulgaria exports arms for 120 million euro a year, while the country's arms imports total 90 million euro. This ratio has been relatively stable for the last few years, says Ivelina Bahchevanova, head of International Controlled Trade and Security Department in Bulgaria's Ministry of Economy and Energy. Bulgaria exports arms mainly to Asia and Africa, but recently the export for the USA and the European Union has increased. It has been the first time the arms export data were made public  and after Bulgaria's accession to the EU they would be announced in the Union, too. Bahchevanova presented a draft bill for the control on export of arms and technologies of dual use adopted by the Council of Ministers yesterday.

Within a month the regulations for the act's implementation will be ready. The act will introduce a public register of the licensed companies and registered arms dealers. Presently there are over 60 companies licensed to trade in arms and dual use products. The amendments will facilitate their work, especially in the European Union.
