Bulgaria's EU Accession to Bring Lower Prices

Date: 16.10.2006

Bulgaria's 2007 EU membership will bring about changes in the prices of essential goods, as import taxes are abolished.

"If the tax on meat import is removed that will face Bulgarian producers with some serious competition and as a result of that prices will drop", Georgi Ganev from Bulgaria's liberal strategies centre said for Darik News.

The prices of imported cigarettes are expected to fall because taxes on them will be dropped as well.

"The great boom in real estate sales has passed and from now on it is expected that Bulgarian property prices will have outrunning growth in comparison with EU prices".

The prices of second-hand cars will considerably, but eco-taxes will increase and that will probably result in offset between the two.

"There are no exact prognoses as to the prices of fruits and vegetables", Ganev said.

The change of the bread prices will depend on the harvest, not on Bulgaria's future EU membership.

"No sharp changes in the inflation rate are expected in 2007 in Bulgaria", Ganev added.
