Bulgarian Society Unprepared for Immigration Wave after EU Accession

Date: 23.10.2006

Bulgarian society is not ready for the forthcoming immigration wave after the country's accession in the European Union, shows a survey of the Manfred Woerner Foundation.

Foreigners are still not seen as a threat for the Bulgarian labour market but there is a trend of xenophobia in Western Europe that will spread in the country, stated the survey on the Bulgarian view over immigrant communities.

For Bulgarians the emigration of fellow countrymen is more alarming then the future intense immigration.

According to the survey 12% of the Bulgarians show xenophobic convictions. The question should foreigners have equal rights as Bulgarians caused most controversial answers and discontent among the interviewed people.
