Sofia Nods Garbage Transportation to Central Bulgaria

Date: 24.10.2006

Sofia's municipal council held a special opened session on Monday and decided to transport its trash to the central Bulgarian dumps of Karlovo and Plovdiv.

The municipal council of Bulgaria's second largest city Plovdiv decided last week in favour of accepting 200,000 tons of Sofia's garbage in return for BGN 47 M. Karlovo's dump will also take some 80,000 tons of garbage in exchange for BGN 17 M.

Bulgaria's government will soon decide on two more dumps for the capital's trash. Last week the depot on the territory of steel-making Kremikovtzi plant was proved illegal by the regional environment and waters inspectorate.

The eco-taxes and expenses for the transportation of the capital's garbage to Central Bulgaria will be between BGN 10 and 15 M.

At present Sofia is at a loss as to where its abundance of garbage bales would be stored. Media in the country have already started talking of a "garbage war," "trash terrorism," and calling the waste crisis a karate gig.
