Bulgaria Builds First Private Prison

Date: 06.11.2006

The first private prison in Bulgaria will be built in Sofia, deputy Justice Minister Dimitar Bongalov announced on Friday.

The Ministry still cannot give information when will the construction start and in which part of the capital it will be situated. There are suggestions for potential building sites in Kremikovtzi, Suhodol, Dolni Lozen and Slivnitza neighbourhoods.

Introducing the business in this area, competition conditions will emerge, which will enhance conditions in prisons and diminish expenses of Bulgaria's citizens.

To this moment there are 11 500 prisoners in Bulgaria, living space in prisons is 22 000 square metres, which makes 2 square metres per prisoner, when European standards range from four to six square metres.

Sofia Prison's Chief Mileti Oresharski said a prisoner costs the government BGN 4000 (EUR 2045) a year.
