EU-Bound News Focus Bulgarians Attention

Date: 07.11.2006

The coming accession of Bulgaria to the EU tops the topics of interest for Bulgarian TV watchers.

According to a fresh survey, a total of 47% respondents said they are following the EU-related news and 22% said they are eating up every piece of news concerning the entry in two months.

The survey made by Market Links sociological agency pinned at regional events, the fight against crime and EU-related news as top three topics followed by Bulgaria's TV audience.

The survey was conducted among 1208 ordinary people and 159 journalists, and covered 16 electronic media for the period May-September 2006.

Nearly half of ordinary respondents (45%) and 58% of journalists estimated the European integration coverage in the media as "sufficient", while respectively 17% and 28% consider it "insufficient".

As sub-topics of the EU-focused interest the research outlined crime (17.7%), the EC monitoring report (17.4%), the readiness of the country for membership (10%), internal affairs ahead of accession (7%) and constitutional changes (4%).

The researchers from Market Links pointed out the lack of critical materials on specific issues, which are healthy for the debate and raising the awareness of citizens to EU affairs.
