Corruption Still a Problem for Bulgaria

Date: 08.11.2006

Bulgaria will enter the EU as a country still unable to deal with corruption, Transparency International's 2006 Corruption Perception Index shows.

From all EU member states only Poland and Romania suffer more serious problems than Bulgaria, the report said.

From 2002 to 2006 Bulgaria moved up four points in the index, Focus news agency reported, quoting index results. In 2006 the country's index is four.

Transparency International uses a 10-points index. A value of 10 represents a very low corruption level, while 0 stands for very high corruption level.

Bulgaria ranks 57th among 163 countries presented in the Transparency International report.

Corruption Perception Indices are based on 12 analyses carried out by nine independent institutions in each country, Focus news agency reported.

The aim of the index is to evaluate corruption levels within the administrative sector and the political sphere. It also takes in consideration evaluations of foreign businesses operating in the country and the academic sector.
