Bulgaria marks 17 years of Democracy

Date: 10.11.2006

Seventeen years ago, on November 10 1989, only a day after the collapse of the Berlin Wall Bulgaria woke up with a coup.

The state head Todor Zhivkov who had ruled the country for 33 years was overthrown as the result of an internal party coup. Zhivkov was excluded from the ruling Bulgarian Communist Party (BCP).

November 10 1989 started Bulgaria's transformation to a democratic country.

The creation and restoration of parties and the rising of opposition began right after the coup.

Bulgaria, as all ex-communist Eastern European countries, started transition from planned to  market economy.

Bulgaria entered NATO on March 24 2004. The country's accession to the European Union is scheduled for January 1 2007.
