Huge Amounts of Illegal Weapons Discovered in Sofia

Date: 15.11.2006

Huge amounts of illegal weapons, ammunitions and explosive substances have been discovered in Bulgaria's capital Sofia.

The weapons were discovered after a two-day operation of the police in Sofia's Knyazhevo district.

The 42-year-old owner of the house where the weapons were discovered has been arrested. The police said he did not have a criminal record but he was close to bosses of criminal groups from Bulgaria's not so distant past.

The man was hiding weapons who were once used for special "orders" of defunct strong-arm grouping SIC. Two of the discovered guns were equipped with telescopic sights and according to experts the uncovered explosives could demolish an eight-storey building.

At the moment the police are working to identify whether the weapons have been stored in order to be later sold to presently active criminal groups in Bulgaria.
