Mass Anti-Drugs Raid Renders 140 Arrested Dealers, 10 Bulgarians

Date: 14.12.2006

About 140 people have been arrested during a massive operation in 30 countries, 10 Bulgarians among them.

The operation was carried out by the anti-mafia department of Naples and with the active participation of the organized crime combat unit in Sofia.

The busted drug channel was managed by the Camorra group and 'Ndrangheta. It had been active in Bulgaria for the last two years resulting in huge quantities of heroin and cocaine transported across the country.

A part of the cocaine came to Bulgaria from Ecuador, Bolivia and Venezuela and was then smuggled into Italy. The heroine was smuggled from the Middle East and Afghanistan. The drugs were transported aboard planes departing from Sofia Airport or by means of buses.

The smuggling network extended across the world and collaborated with drug bosses from many countries and with judicial authorities in several states, Italian police officials said.

The suspects are believed to be involved not only in drug but also in arms trafficking. Police are looking for at least 8 more individuals associated with the channel.

Over 4 tons of hashish and half a ton of cocaine have been confiscated. Property for over EUR 30 M has been distrained.
