40 % of Bulgaria`s Municipalities Lack PHARE Projects

Date: 15.12.2006

In the past five years, 39 per cent of Bulgaria's municipalities failed winning projects under the EU PHARE programme, Deputy Regional Development and Public Works Minister Dimcho Mihalevski said.

Most of these municipalities were sparsely populated, Darik Radio said.

Half of the municipalities in Bulgaria completed or were carrying out from one to five PHARE projects, Mihalevski said.

All municipalities in Blagoevgrad, Pernik and Sliven regions carried out PHARE projects, Darik said.

The main problem of municipalities was the lack of time for project preparation, Mihalevski said.

Municipalities, NGOs and companies managed to sign 217 contracts for 58.474 million euro PHARE funds in 2004.
