Bulgaria Remembers Soldiers Killed in Iraq Base Attack

Date: 28.12.2006

Bulgaria honours Wednesday the memory of the five Bulgarian soldiers killed in Iraq three years ago in a terror attack against India Base in the city of Karbala.

Bulgaria observed a national day of mourning on December 30, 2003 over the five Bulgarian soldiers.

Four of the young men - Captain Georgi Kachorin, Senior Sergeant Ivan Indzhov, Junior Sergeant Anton Petrov and Private Svilen Kirov - died when a cistern loaded with explosives went off right before the camp of the 480-strong Bulgarian unit. Soldiers managed to shoot the suicide bomber before he could ram the vehicle into the building, but the cistern exploded nevertheless.

A day later, Lieutenant Nikolay Saruev, who was very heavily wounded, died in a Baghdad hospital.

The Iraq death toll for Bulgaria unexpectedly increased in the end of 2006, when all solders were safely home. Vesselin Sariev, a corporal who had served at the Karbala base and was in fact one of the wounded in the bloody attack, killed himself on November 28.
