Bulgaria needs leaders building bridges rather than barricades

Date: 23.01.2007

Bulgaria needed responsible leaders ready to tell the truth and build bridges rather than barricades, President Georgi Purvanov said during a ceremony marking the beginning of his second term in office.

Processes in Bulgaria would hopefully not demand changes in the presidential institution, said Purvanov. The president should continue being responsible for stability and predictable policies, said he.

Bulgaria achieved success on its way to EU membership through such policies, said Purvanov. It was important to modify and adjust without making use of radical changes, said he.

The president will support all initiatives aimed at preserving the Bulgarian spirit, said Purvanov.

It was important to remember that love for Bulgaria and the initiative of various people helped the country achieve its current status, said Purvanov.

Bulgarian politicians were going to be the people responsible for maintaining Bulgaria's identity in the future, said Purvanov.
