Bulgaria pushes efforts to save units 3, 4 of NPP Kozloduy

Date: 27.01.2007

"Bulgaria has to observe its commitments for the decommissioning of the four units of NPP Kozloduy," said Karl Diem, Austria's Ambassador to Bulgaria at a meeting with Bulgaria's President Georgi Parvanov yesterday.

According to him, the EU expects of Bulgaria to continue reforms in justice and home affairs, agriculture, civil aviation, export of foods and efficient absorption of EU funds.

"There is a slim chance that reactors 3 and 4 of NPP Kozloduy can be saved," said Rumen Ovcharov, Bulgaria's Economy and Energy Minister.

In his opinion, the question about reopening the reactors should be raised in the EU.

"EU officials should look beyond their ideological barrier," said Ovcharov.

Ovcharov will participate in a round table organized by Mayor of Sofia Boiko Borisov dedicated to the possibilities for reopening the reactors.

"I called him on the phone to invite him and he accepted," said Borisov.

According to the Mayor of Sofia, there is nothing unusual in the warnings sent by various EU officials that Bulgaria should not raise the question about reactors 3 and 4.

"We will need all the help we can get from all Bulgarian institutions," said Borisov.
