Go-ahead for new highway in Bulgaria

Date: 31.01.2007

The construction of the new Lyulin Highway starts in Bulgaria's capital Sofia on Wednesday.

Bulgaria's Prime Minister Sergey Stanishev and the Regional Development Minister Assen Gagauzov are to turn the first sod.

The facility, in which about EUR142 M are to be invested, will be a part of the 4 and 8 European transport corridors.

The highway will be 19-kilometer-long in total. It will have two lanes in each direction with a maximum possible velocity of 100-110 km/h.

It's expected that the new highway will ease the traffic from Sofia to the nearby town of Pernik, Western Bulgaria.

The National strategy for development and modernization of the infrastructure is among the main priorities of Bulgaria's government as part of the country's integration to the European Union.

Bulgaria plans to construct 717,14 km of highways by 2015.
