Environmentalists in Bulgaria to appeal cabinet's Natura 2000 decision

Date: 28.03.2007

Five environmental organisations appeal partially before the Supreme Administrative Court the Cabinet decision on inclusion of Bulgarian territories in the European Natura 2000 network.

Cabinet approved the final list for inclusion in the protective network on March 2 2007.

Environmentalists said that the national bio-diversity council approved in November 2006 a list of 225 terrains to be included in the network. Cabinet postponed the inclusion of 29 questionable terrains located mainly along the Black Sea coast and near mountain resorts.

The Cabinet then took a decision to postpone the inclusion of 16 other terrains without any scientific argumentation, environmentalists said.

A delay until October 2007 countered bio-diversity regulations, environmentalists said.

Exclusion of areas from the network made the introduction of Natura 2000 pointless, environmentalists said.
