Labour in Bulgaria's capital most expensive, Plovdiv lags behind

Date: 27.04.2007

The capital of Bulgaria, Sofia, offers the most expensive labour in the country, an Industry Watch report showed.

The second biggest city in the country, Plovdiv, as well as Stara Zagora offer nearly 15 per cent lower salaries.

Together with the salary differences, Industry Watch analysts observed different costs of living in Bulgarian cities.

Sofia is the most expensive Bulgarian city, followed by the coastal centre of Varna. One lev buys nearly 26 per cent more goods and services in the town of Pleven than it does in Sofia.

Plovdiv lags behind. The standards in the city seem to be lower than those in Sofia, Varna and Bourgas.

Varna and Bourgas are coastal cities and experience international competition, Industry Watch representatives said. As a reason, the two cities achieved more dynamic development than Plovdiv.

At the same time, labour supply in Plovdiv is high, as it is a regional city. The high number of workers enables employers the most inexpensive labour.
