Less revenue despite increased tourism in Bulgaria

Date: 30.07.2007

The volume of tourists traveling to Bulgaria this year is expected to increase from 2006 figures, but revenue is expected to diminish.

The decrease in revenue may cause a crisis in the tourism sector, said chairman of the National Tourism Board (NTB), Georgi Gergov. According to him, the decrease can be attributed to chaos in the tourism sector, a lack of control and uneven allocation of funds.

The bulk of investments are made in coastal resorts, where supply exceeds demand, causing a reduction in prices and revenue. The average price per room at the seaside has dropped from 26.4 euro in 2001 to 11.6 euro in 2006 and 10.8 euro in 2007.
