Razgrad, Bulgaria hosts yoghurt festival

Date: 30.07.2007

A one-of-a-kind festival entirely dedicated to yoghurt took place from July 23 to 25th 2007 in Razgrad, a town in north-eastern Bulgaria.

At the first yoghurt festival in 2001, the biggest attractions were the old local ladies and their coppers with home made yogurt. Five years this is a place for discussion of the universal application of this product.

The ambassadors of Japan and Indonesia are among the guests of the unique event.

Viktoria Prohorova was elected as Queen of the Yoghurt among many young dancers from Russia, Ukariane, Turkey and Bulgaria.

She explained to the audience about the magic qualities of yogurt with strawberries. It is a combination that is good for both women’s skin and for her suitors.

Professor Todor Minkov, who attended the festival as a special guest, related a story about Bulgarian yoghurt. Once upon a time there was a big flood that covered the whole world except for the Balkans, leaving the microflora in the region unaffected.

This allowed bacillus bulgaricus to grow in the region. The story says that Thracian women were the first to discovered its qualities and started making sour milk. Later, a witch doctor from Constantinople healed a French king using sour milk, popularizing yoghurt, which means thick milk, throughout Europe.
