Date: 27.09.2007

The United Nations World Tourist Organization marks the World Tourism Day on September 27th. On this occasion Anelia Krushkova, Chairwoman of Bulgaria’s State Agency for Tourism /SAT/, said in an address broadcast on the Bulgarian National Television that the aim of the initiative was to attract the attention of the international community to the importance of tourism and its role in the development of social, cultural, political and economic spheres.

The World Tourism Day motto in 2007 is Tourism opens doors to women, Krushkova said, adding tourism is a sector in the world economy that not only provides jobs for a considerable number of women, but also gives multiple opportunities for their development.

She noted in the recent years Bulgaria has had a real tourist boom – construction of many new hotels and tourist attractions. According to Krushkova 170,000 people are employed in Bulgaria’s tourist sector.
