Employment rate in Bulgaria is 59%

Date: 23.10.2007
Employment in Bulgaria is still low, despite the growth and many new positions the market has opened for the past few years. The rate is around 59%, whereas the EU old member states have an average of 66%. The rate of economically active Bulgarians is also low. The Portuguese presidency of the EU targets an EU overall employment rate of 70% by 2010, which is unattainable for Bulgaria. The country’s national goal is to mark a 61% employment after 3 years, on condition that the GDP keeps growing by 5-6% on an annual base. That means another 50,000 new positions per year for the period 2007 – 2010.
