Bulgaria seals projects on fixing 6 more NATURA 2000 protected areas

Date: 25.10.2007

Bulgaria's Environment Minister Dzhevdet Chakarov signed Wednesday draft orders over fixing six more protected areas, which will be included in NATURA 2000 program.

The areas concerned are on the territory of Russe, Varna, Plovdiv, Montana and Pleven municipalities.

The number of the protected zones, whose boundaries have been agreed on, has already reached 295.

"These areas form a total of 28% of the country's territory," Minister Chakarov announced.

"Another 44 areas' boundaries are to be discussed in the end of this month. If fixed, about 35% of Bulgaria's territory will be protected," the minister added.

There will be introduced restrictions connected to the regime and the mating season of the birds in the zone.

The landowners will receive compensations set at between EUR 150 and 200 per hectare, the Deputy Agriculture Minister Dimitar Peychev explained about a month ago.

The parties, involved in the process of developing NATURA 2000 program, will be given the opportunity to present their statements on the matter for 30 days, starting from October 25.
