Bulgaria's Kozloduy nuke unit 6 back online

Date: 01.11.2007

Unit 6 of Bulgaria's sole nuclear power plant at Kozloduy on the Danube River was reconnected to the power grid late on Tuesday, following a check by the nuclear regulation body.

The power plant began shutting down unit 6 for annual maintenance at the beginning of September. The 1000-megawatt VVER type unit was refuelled, repair works and preventive measures were conducted.

After the end of the annual repairs on the eve of the winter season, unit 6 will generate 2 000 MW for the country's electricity grid.

At the end of last year, hours before joining the European Union, the country shut down reactors number 3 and 4 at Kozloduy nuclear power station to meet the safety requirements of the European bloc.

Units 5&6 remain online and working, while units 1&2, the oldest pair, were shut down in 2003.
