French Carrefour eyes 2009 opening for Sofia Mall

Date: 06.11.2007

French hypermarket chain Carrefour plans to open the doors of its biggest investment in Bulgaria, a shopping mall on Sofia's Tsarigradsko Shosse boulevard, in 2009, company officials said on Monday.

The mall will sprawl on 14 000 square metres, with three floors and three underground parking levels, according to Jerome Loubere, managing partner of Carrefour Marinopoulos, the chain's Greek subsidiary, which oversees expansion into Bulgaria.

Entertainment will also have an important role to play in the future mall, with close to one tenth of its total surface allocated for those purposes, he added.

Carrefour plans to open up to 20 hypermarkets and malls throughout Bulgaria over the next seven years, with the first one opening its doors at the end of 2008 in the Black Sea port of Burgas.

The company plans to use the same blueprint, with malls adjacent to Carrefour hypermarkets in Plovdiv, Varna, Stara Zagora and Russe, said Loubere.
