Bulgarian village shoots bear

Date: 15.11.2007

The hunting society in the Bulgarian village of Stoikite has shot a 250 kg meat-eating bear.

The bear was shot on November 12 at around 17.30 in the Souharya area near the village.

The Ecology and Water Affairs Ministry had given a permit a month earlier to shoot the bear. The bear was said to have destroyed beehives and had attacked sheep, Dimitar Bouhov from Stoikite said.

"The bear did great damage to the village. The fact that it came so close to the houses scared people," he said.

He said the chase of the bear started early in the morning, when it had attacked a beehive in the Grashtitsa area. The bear was a male bear, of about eight years old and with a weight of 250 kg.

The hunting society in Stoikite had received help from hunters from the nearby village of Shiroka luka. It was on of the Shiroka luka hunters, Stefan Balabanov, who shot the bear.
