Bulgaria stays 33rd in European purchasing power rankings

Date: 16.11.2007

Bulgaria ranked 33rd, same as last year, in the annual purchasing power ranking of European countries carried out by German-based market research firm GfK.

The average purchasing power in Bulgaria in 2007 is EUR 2 453, according to the survey.

Among southeastern European countries, Greece ranks highest - 18th with a per capita purchasing power of EUR 12 203.

Neighbouring Serbia, Turkey and Romania occupy the three spots above Bulgaria in the rankings, while Macedonia is two places behind, in 35th.

Although in a country comparison, the new EU member states are still lagging behind their western neighbours, the survey shows that in some more affluent eastern and central European municipalities the purchasing power is higher than in the poor communities in eastern Europe, GfK said.

Switzerland and Liechtenstein, which are grouped as one entity by GfK for the purposes of the survey, kept its top position with a per capita purchasing power of EUR 27 521, followed by Luxembourg and Norway.

Moldova continues to prop the table in 40th place, with an annual per capita purchasing power of just EUR 685.
