USAID launches USD 3 M grant fund in Bulgaria

Date: 19.11.2007

US Agency for International Development (USAID) launched on Thursday a three-year grant fund, endowed with USD 3 M, to support three key areas of reform and development in the country.

Those areas are good governance, competitiveness and the support of vulnerable groups, with both local and Bulgarian-based international organisations eligible for funding.

It will also support programmes that have a regional or international focus, creating linkages between Bulgarian government, business, NGOs and their counterparts in other countries, with average grant amounts estimated at USD 25 000.

The fund will continue a 17-year-long partnership between USAID and Bulgaria, which will continue the agency's efforts to strengthen democracy in the country, US ambassador to Bulgaria John Beyrle.

The fund, which will be active until November 2010, is modelled after and will be managed by the German Marshall Fund Balkan Trust for Democracy and is the last initiative by USAID in the country before exiting next year.
