Stefan Danailov to play in Pygmalion at the National Theatre

Date: 09.12.2007

Bulgaria's Culture Minister Stefan Danailov will perform in a guest-appearance in Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion on December 11 at Ivan Vazov National Theatre. The troupe is dedicating the play to the 65th anniversary of the famous actor-minister.

"A play full of charm and humour", as director Leon Daniel's setting has been described, is the longest running title in the troupe's repertoire, had its premiere on March 7, 1998.

Actors in the play were Reni Vrangova, Valentin Ganev, Marius Donkin, Zhorzheta Chakurova, Yordanka Kouzmanova, Blagovesta Kabaivanova, Hristo Cheshmedjiev, Albena Georgieva, Stoyan Pepelanov and Georgi Delov.

Elena Ivanova did scenography and costumes. The music is by Kiril Donchev.

Leon Daniel discovered in junior high school the ancient Greek myth of the sculptor, who fell in love with the woman he sculptured. He asked Aphrodite to give life to her. According to some authors the statue that became alive was named Galatea. During his childhood in Rousse the director acted out with friends the American film based on this plot, which was being shown at the Royal cinema.

And yet the original content of the feeling for Pygmalion for him, remained what Bernard Shaw wrote, Leon Daniel confessed.
