Bulgaria business warns of dramatic workforce shortage

Date: 18.12.2007

Bulgaria's businessmen warned Monday of growing shortage of qualified workforce, as shown in the annual study of the Bulgarian Industrial Association (BIA) on the business climate of the country.

"Shortage of qualified workforce is dramatically growing in Bulgaria," the president of the organization Bozhidar Danev said at the start of BIA's press conference.

According to Danev, 50% of the companies on the market have difficulties in employing personnel.

The study, which was conducted among companies that are members of the association, shows that bureaucracy, corruption, and unfair competition are the other major obstacles to Bulgaria's business.

About 45% of the companies say the level of corruption stays the same in comparison to last year, while 43% think the crime level is without a change. Businessmen also complained of the low quality of the administrative services.

However, the results show that Bulgaria's accession to the European Union has had a positive effect on the economy as only 15% say the EU membership made the business climate worse while 45% see it as beneficial.
