Number of religions is rising because of tolerance policy

Date: 19.12.2007

The increased number of registered religions in Bulgaria was a result of a policy characteristic for both Bulgaria and the whole of EU, namely policy of tolerance towards religious communities, bishop Hristo Proykov, President of the Episcopal Confederation of the Catholic Church in Bulgaria said. As an example of tolerance he gave the fact that in Sofia there were Catholic, Jewish and Islamic temples just next to each other.

He added that education in religion in school was a natural way for one to get to know others from different religious communities and thus to compare and evaluate the differences.
