Bulgarians are optimistic

Date: 21.12.2007

A survey conducted by pollster Alpha Research at the request of Bulgarian Minister of European Affairs Gergana Grancharova reveals that 80% of the Bulgarians are satisfied with country’s EU membership. 54% of the citizens are worried over the rocketing prices, 38% are most concerned with the galloping inflation. According to 37% of the respondents, the worst result of Bulgaria’s membership is brain drain and workforce shortage.

Nevertheless, 79% of all Bulgarians feel contented with Bulgaria's EU membership. Most optimistic of them are the young people, Alpha Research Managing Partner Sociologist Boriana Dimitrova emphasized. The young well-educated people believe that the country's EU membership will have a favorable impact on their life. The middle-aged Bulgarians don't expect any substantial change, while the elderly people (over 61) think that they will rather lose than benefit from Bulgaria's EU membership.

52% of the Bulgarians regard the lighter travel regulations and work opportunities as the greatest advantage of the membership. A large part of the Bulgarians – 41%, doubts the transparency of the EU funds appropriation.

Survey conducted by Eurobarometer, however, is far from optimistic. It shows that Bulgaria is the most skeptical country compared to other newly integrated states. 52% of the citizens stated that they approve the membership, which sets Bulgaria among the most disaffected member states together with the UK, Latvia, Austria, Hungary, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Finland, Italy and Malta.
