Bulgaria first in ‘export of people’ in the EU

Date: 23.12.2007

There are ten new member states among the 27 members of the EU, and they joined the bloc two years ago. For this period each of these stood out with something particular in the united European club – something in the field of trade, banking, tourism, or services. Bulgaria also stood out with something, but it should be noted that it was not in the best way.

According a 2007 report of the Center for Analysis of Democracy Issues, which studies crime and corruption in Europe, Bulgaria comes first in terms of ‘export of prostitutes’ to countries from the EU. According to the information, after the country joined the EU, the ‘flow’ of women aged 15 to 30, to Western Europe, has sharply increased.

The activity of these ‘representatives’ of Bulgaria to EU countries, brings between EUR 900 Million and 1.8 Billion as money transfers every year.
