Date: 27.01.2008

On January 28, the European day for data protection, the Bulgarian Access to Information Programme (AIP) and Internet Society Bulgaria, will award the 2008 Big Brother awards.

Big Brother awards are an initiative of Privacy International and will be awarded in Bulgaria for the fourth time.

Named after the character from George Orwell's novel Nineteen Eighty-Four, the awards are presented to state institutions, companies or individuals who have violated the sanctity of the individual and the protection of personal data.

Nominated for the 2008 Big Brother awards in Bulgaria are the Bulgarian Council of Ministers, the Interior Ministry, road police (KAT), the Registration Agency and the committee for the protection of personal data.

The award ceremony will be held on January 28, at 11am in the Red House Centre for culture and debate, in Sofia.
